A Town with a Rich History
Superior was named after its founders’ hometown of Superior, Wisconsin, in 1869, and the post office was established in 1871 following one of the largest gold strikes in the West. Mining, logging, and United States Forest Service activities have been central to its economy. Notably, the Superior Hotel received the first Bibles to be placed in hotel rooms by The Gideons in 1908. The town’s history is preserved and celebrated at the Mineral County Museum.
Location and Geography
Superior is situated on the northeast side of the Bitterroot Range. It lies 57 miles northwest of Missoula and 60 miles southeast of Wallace, Idaho, along Interstate 90. The town experiences significant snowfall in the winter, contributing to its lush environment and numerous mountain streams feeding into the Clark Fork River.
