Discover the Charm of an Old Railroad Town

About 30 minutes west of Missoula, Alberton is a historic railroad town known for its vibrant history and stunning natural beauty. Nestled along the Clark Fork River, this quaint town offers a unique blend of outdoor adventure and rich heritage.

A History Rooted in the Railroad

Alberton owes its origins to the iconic Milwaukee Railroad, which sought a route across America to the Pacific Coast in the early 1900s. Railway Company President Albert J. Earling chose the north bank of the Clark Fork River, where two families were homesteading: Henry and Catherine Brown, and Amadie and Phoebe Agnes Poirier. The town was incorporated in 1920, with Elmer Slater serving as the first mayor. Although the trains stopped running in 1986, the spirit of the railroad era continues to live on in Alberton.
