Situated at the confluence of the St. Regis and Clark Fork rivers, St. Regis is primarily a tourist-related town with much to offer. The town boasts a golf course, a large community park, and a visitor information center. Every Memorial Day weekend, St. Regis hosts Montana’s largest flea market, attracting visitors from all over the region. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the scenic route of the Hiawatha Trail is a must-visit. Travel via an old railroad bed, over trestles, and through tunnels, through the Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho and Montana.

A Rich History

St. Regis, or Saint Regis, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Mineral County, Montana. The population was 313 at the time of the 2020 census. Pierre-Jean De Smet traveled extensively in this area of Montana and named the river after which the town takes its name, after a fellow Jesuit priest. The Northern Pacific Railway built a railroad through the town in the early 1900s, boosting the economy.

Geography and Climate

St. Regis is located in the Lolo National Forest and the Bitterroot Mountains, about 30 miles from Idaho. The town has a total area of 0.9 square miles, with a small portion of it being water. St. Regis has a humid continental climate, typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm summers and cold winters.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 319 people residing in the CDP. The racial makeup was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American and Asian residents. The community consists of both families and individuals, with a median age of 39 years.

Education

St. Regis School District educates students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district includes three schools, with a total enrollment of 195 students for the 2021-2022 school year. The high school team is known as the Tigers. A branch of the Mineral County Public Library is also located in St. Regis.

  • Events: The Memorial Day Weekend Parade and Flea Market and the Fourth of July parade are major annual events that draw large crowds. The flea market features over 200 vendors and attracts visitors from across the northwest.
